(Web Desk): Press freedom groups and rights advocates express outrage over Israel’s killing of five Palestinian journalists, including one from Al Jazeera, in an attack that killed 21 people at a Gaza hospital, Al Jazeera reported.

Hussam al-Masri (Reuters), Mohammad Salama (Al Jazeera), Mariam Abu Daqqa (freelance), Ahmed Abu Aziz and Moaz Abu Taha were killed in the attack.

A sixth journalist, Hassan Douhan (Al-Hayat al-Jadida), was killed by Israeli forces in a separate incident in Khan Younis.

Israeli attacks kill at least 61 Palestinians throughout Gaza since dawn, medical sources say.

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem urges the Lebanese government to revoke its decision to disarm the group, vowing to stand against Israel’s “expansionist project”.

Israel has killed at least 62,744 people and wounded 158,259 in its war on Gaza. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Anas, Ismail, Shireen: The names of Al Jazeera journalists killed by Israel

Israel’s war has not only destroyed and starved Gaza; it has also systematically killed those documenting its atrocities. Among the dead, Al Jazeera’s several journalists stood as both witnesses and victims of what rights groups describe as genocide.

The latest was Mohammad Salama, killed today in an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, alongside four other journalists. Legal experts say such attacks form part of a wider pattern of systematically targeting journalists.

On December 14, 2023, cameraman Samer Abudaqa was struck while reporting with Gaza bureau chief Wael Dahdouh, who was injured in the attack but survived. Abudaqa was left to bleed to death after Israeli forces blocked medics from reaching him.

On January 7, 2024, Wael’s eldest son and fellow journalist Hamza Dahdouh was killed when a missile hit his car. Video journalist Mustafa Thuraya was killed in the same attack.

On July 31, 2024, reporter Ismail al-Ghoul and cameraman Rami al-Rifi were killed in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, despite wearing press vests and travelling in a clearly marked vehicle.

On December 15, 2024, Ahmed al-Louh was killed in Nuseirat camp.

On March 24, 2025, Hossam Shabat, 23, was killed in Beit Lahiya.

Most recently, Anas al-Sharif, 28, was killed alongside colleagues Mohammed Qreiqeh, 33, Ibrahim Zaher, 25, and Mohammed Noufal, 29, in a deliberate Israeli strike on a media tent outside al-Shifa Hospital.

And even before this war, in May 2022, veteran correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead while wearing her blue press vest during an Israeli raid in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.

In all, at least 11 Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in Israel’s latest war on Gaza, part of a broader toll of about 240 media workers.
